The numbers below cover consoles only. PC gets its own note at the end, because no PC version has been announced.
How much space the game takes
On PS5 the game needs 212 GB of free space.
On Xbox Series it needs up to 212 GB: Rockstar says it depends on your device and gives no separate figures for Series X and Series S.
Check the free space on your console before you start the download.
| Platform | Space | Pre-load | Launch in Ukraine |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | 212 GB | 10 November, local midnight | 19 November, 00:00 Kyiv time |
| Xbox Series X|S | up to 212 GB | 10 November, 02:00 Kyiv time | no time listed for Ukraine |
When you can download
Pre-load is open from 10 November: from local midnight on PS5 and from 02:00 Kyiv time on Xbox.
PS5 launch in Ukraine: 00:00 Kyiv time on 19 November.
Between those dates the files sit on your console, but the game will not start.
For PS5 to download the game by itself, Sony says to tick auto-download in the game’s countdown timer in advance (Game Library > Your Collection), turn on Stay Connected to the Internet for rest mode and put the console into rest mode. The PS Store also requires Automatic Login and Auto Sign-In to be enabled.
On Xbox, automatic pre-load needs automatic updates turned on and the console powered on or in Sleep mode.
How long it will take
Rockstar gives no download time, so here is the plain arithmetic. At a steady 100 Mbit/s, 212 GB takes almost 5 hours; at 50 Mbit/s, more than 9. That is our own sum for ideal conditions, and in practice it will take longer. Best not to leave it until the night before.
Will the box help?
No, it saves no space. The physical version holds a code, not the game.
The physical version is a code in a box with no disc. It is on sale from 12 November, Standard Edition only.
While we’re here, a rumour that keeps circling the box.
A paper map in the box is only a rumour: Rockstar makes no mention of it.
